How to Care for Cut Flowers at Home (And Make Them Last Longer!)

There’s nothing quite like walking into a room and being greeted by the soft scent and
beauty of fresh flowers. Whether it’s a romantic bouquet from a loved one, a treat-
yourself bunch from LA ROSE, or a floral gift from a friend — fresh flowers add a little
luxury and joy to everyday life.

To help you get the most out of your blooms, we’ve created this easy guide to caring for
your cut flowers at home. With just a few simple steps, you can keep your bouquet
looking fresh, vibrant, and utterly gorgeous for days longer.

Step 1: Start with a Clean Vase
Before your flowers go in, make sure your vase is squeaky clean. Bacteria lurking in dirty
vases is one of the top culprits for wilting blooms. A quick wash with warm water and a
drop of washing-up liquid will do the trick. Rinse thoroughly!

Step 2: Trim Those Stems
Using sharp scissors or secateurs, snip about 2–3 cm off each stem at an angle. This
gives your flowers a better surface to drink from and helps them absorb more water.
Repeat every couple of days to keep the water flowing.

Step 3: Fresh, Cool Water is Key
Fill your vase with fresh, cool water — not too full, just enough to cover the lower third of
the stems. Add the flower food provided with your bouquet (we always include some in
every LA ROSE bunch!). It feeds your blooms and keeps bacteria at bay.

Step 4: Remove Lower Leaves
Strip off any leaves that will sit below the water line. Leaves in the water can rot and
create bacteria, which shortens your flowers’ vase life.

Step 5: Find Their Happy Place
Keep your flowers away from direct sunlight, radiators, and fruit bowls (yes, really — fruit
gives off ethylene gas, which speeds up ageing in flowers!). A cool, shaded spot is best.

Step 6: Change the Water Every 2 Days
Fresh water is like a spa treatment for flowers. Change it every other day, rinse the
stems, and give them another trim to keep things fresh.

Bonus Tip: Talk to Your Flowers

Okay, maybe we’re being a little whimsical — but caring for flowers is a beautiful ritual.
Taking a moment to admire them, adjust them, and show them a little love can brighten
your day too.
